Alpino Gelato- The first ever to introduce gelato to the shores of Australia!!!

Alpino gelato was founded in 1950 when Filomena and Vincenzo Tropeano migrated from their home country of Italy and brought with them their family, including her daughter Anna.

Along with their family, they also brought their knowledge and passion on how to make the FIRST and finest Gelato ever to hit the sandy shores of Australia.

Here is a family’s journey on how Australia first received gelato:

Awaiting the arrival of his family, Vincenzo Tropeano was first to hit the shores of Australia, working on the cane fields of Queensland, saving every penny he could make to bring his family closer to him, and to buy a property large enough to follow the dream of making gelato. Two years past and his family joined him and in 1949, they all managed together to buy the property in Marrickville Sydney, and make their dream come alive in 1950 when Alpino was born. Alpino resides at the same address today.

Alp-ino (Alpino), Signifying the snow capped Alp mountains of Italy, so fittingly reassembling an indulgent gelato, opened its doors on the 1st August 1950 and Filomena Tropeano put her culinary skills in HISTORY. Australia welcomed the first EVER gelato company that is still going strong today!

Filomena, an entrepreneur for her time, made her factory come to life, starting off with over 15 workers and 6 trucks hitting the whole of Australia.

Her Classic Cassata brought reminiscence to all the migrants from Europe who indulged in their traditional desserts, whilst for those already native to the country enjoyed her fusion of Australian native fruits to her fantastic gelato and sorbet mixes.

Alpino was alive! All faces of Australia enjoyed the freshness and purity of the gelato. As time passed, Filomena retired and passed on the knowledge and history to her daughter Anna Nobile, who is the current director along with her husband Giuseppe Nobile, ensuring that heritage purity and excellence is always a priority.

Today the Famous and most culinary Chefs recognise Alpino both in Australia and over seas.

The desserts are made only of natural products.

Our Philosophy is to make our high Quality Real Gelato. The same secret recipe served to you, now for over 55 years.

Alpino Gelato is not a pre-mix packet Gelato. So what is real Alpino Gelato? For the uninitiated, Gelato is an Italian ice cream that is denser and tastes richer than regular ice cream. The Philosophy is to use less fat and whole milk instead of cream. The velvety dense quality is because very little air is whipped into the Gelato. Gelato generally has less than 35% air - resulting in a dense and extremely flavoursome product. The Sugar content is Lower and the quality ingredients are much higher. Our philosophy not to use pre-mixes ensures no gelatine or animal fats are not in our product. There are is no room for Pre-mixes in Alpino Gelato. We stick to our quality Philosphpy and serve it straight you to you.
